Profile

Founded in 1868, the Technical University of Munich stretches over four large locations in Bavaria: Munich, Garching, Weihenstephan and Straubing. This is where the university’s 15 faculties and most important research institutions are located. Internationally, the TUM is now represented on four continents with its own locations. In 2002, it was the first German university to open a campus abroad in Singapore: TUM Asia. TUM offers over 170 degree courses, 48 of which are Master’s programmes in English. The range of subjects includes Medicine and Health Sciences, Engineering and Natural and Life Sciences, as well as Social Sciences. There are approx. 42,000 students enrolled. TUM places great emphasis on academic teaching. Its high quality was recognised in 2011 in the Germany-wide “Excellent Teaching” competition. The university trains its students with a focus on research, and world-renowned experts in their subject teach there.

Individual funding is provided to students in the young academy and various mentoring programmes, for instance. Over the past few years, the university has developed many courses that are tailor-made for female students. That is because the university wants to attract far more young women to natural sciences or technology. In order to support future students in their choice of study programme at any early stage, TUM offers numerous opportunities for study orientation. Students can conveniently apply for a degree via the internet.

When entering the world of work, students are supported by many former (“alumni”) and a dedicated Career Service. The top ranking in the Global Employability Ranking is testimony to the TUM’s top-quality education for both science and business. Contacts to the industry are established, among other ways, at the annual contract fair, IKOM. The university supports its students with developing their own business ideas – and with founding their own company.
